Brains
Brains are fascinating and amazing things.
We know so little about them
As recently as 1957 Henry Gustav Molaison who was sufferring from epilepsy had part of his brain sucked out through a straw. The doctor was experimenting freely. As a result of this total removal of his hypothalamus, Henry completely lost all ability to create or store new memories, although his memories from before this so called operation remained unaffected, he was able to have an articulate conversation which seconds later he had no idea had occurred..
Poor Henry then became the subject of more research into his brain than anyone else. Since he died his brain has been stored and treasured so that when the science is there, it can be fully analysed.
Right now, his brain is being corellated with all the research done through conversations with Henry while he lived.
Unwittingly he has become probably the most important person in existence as far as our understanding of brains and how they function is concerned.
We still know almost nothing.
One of the most fascinationg things for me about all this, is that although he could not store new information at all, Henry could create and store body memory.
So, he'd be able to learn new skills like riding a bike or driving a car even though he'd never be able to remember where he was going.
